my absolute must-visit restaurants if you’re staying in cotignac, france

One of the nicest things about Cotignac is how well you can eat without having to go further afield. These are the places I return to again and again, and the ones I recommend to every guest at La Bergerie…

Le Bistro de Bonne Maison

Best for: classic French dining

This is where I go for proper, traditional French cooking. In summer you eat outside under the shade of the plane trees. In winter you move inside to the dining room, which is simple yet chic. Either way, it's a lovely place to settle in for a long meal with a choice of excellent local wines.

Le Jardin Secret at Lou Calen

Best for: a special occasion

For a birthday, an anniversary, or simply a romantic meal to remember, this is my choice. Le Jardin Secret is the farmhouse restaurant at the Lou Calen hotel, and you can book for lunch or dinner on the shaded garden terrace or in one of their dining rooms inside.

Café du Cours

Best for: casual everyday lunches and dinners

When you just want an easy, relaxed meal, head to Café du Cours. The menu has a great range of dishes, so there's something to keep guests of all ages happy. It's a good one to remember if you're travelling with children. It’s also a great spot just for a coffee and a bit of people watching.

Temps de Pose

Best for: market day lunch

After a Tuesday morning at the market, this is the perfect place to stop. Try the snails, and look out for the special of the day, which is always a delicious French classic. It sits on the Place de la Mairie, with pretty views of the fountain and the main square. You’ll need to book ahead in high season.

la table de nina

Best for: weekday lunch

After a morning exploring Cotignac, this is a great local family restaurant to try. Seasonal French dishes prepared with love and care are the order of the day. The open-air restaurant can be found above The Coffee Spot in the grounds of La Falaise Hotel, with pretty views of the street below. You’ll need to book ahead.

A few tips

  • Book ahead in summer. The best tables go quickly, especially for lunch on market day.

  • Check opening days before you go. Many village restaurants close one or two days a week, and some change their hours out of season.

  • Take your time. Lunch here is never rushed, so don't plan anything too soon afterwards.

Bon appétit! If you're staying at La Bergerie, I'm always happy to help you choose or make a reservation.

Note - At the time of writing, George Clooney has confirmed he’ll be opening an Italian restaurant in the centre of Cotignac in Spring 2027. It may have a spot on this must-visit list soon!
