A lovingly restored, centuries-old farmhouse in Cotignac
La Bergerie is a delightful space to relax and totally immerse yourself in nature. This is rural simplicity at its best. The interiors are understated and calming, natural stone floors are complemented by vintage French furniture and colours are inspired by the landscape.
at a glance…
the house
-
La Bergerie offers three air-conditioned bedrooms that sleep up to six people across two floors.
The Garden Suite has a large king-sized bed with direct access to a secluded garden terrace and ensuite bathroom.
Upstairs you’ll find a Double Bedroom, Twin Room and shared family bathroom. There is a small additional daybed on the landing available for smaller guests by arrangement.
All bed linens and towels (including pool towels) are provided.
Please note that the daybed is open to the staircase and is unsuitable for toddlers.
-
You’ll find one shared bathroom with shower on the first floor, and an ensuite with bath and shower in the Garden Suite.
An additional cloakroom with toilet & sink is located on the ground floor next to the kitchen and pantry.
-
Time at La Bergerie is mostly spent in the extensive grounds, soaking up those magnificent views and the house is well set up for dining en plein air. Dine at one of the two unique stone tables, at the wrought iron bistro set or on the long dining table beside the kitchen. The dappled shade of the trees providing coolness from the warm Provençal sun.
You’ll find comfortable Neptune sofas on the sunset terrace and six sunloungers by the pool.
Inside there are plenty of comfortable air-conditioned spaces to relax too. Squashy sofas, an antique French dining table for six and stools to perch at the kitchen island, wine in hand, whilst the chef cooks.
Please also note there is no TV at the house but the WiFi is good so you may wish to stream entertainment on your own device.
-
La Bergerie sits comfortably within 5 acres of wild, untamed terraces and meadows. Close to the house you’ll find a pool, petanque court and parking for up to three cars.
You can enjoy direct access to the forest tracks where you can explore the woods and hills surrounding the farmhouse.
Please note, the pool is unfenced and therefore regrettably unsuitable for young children and non-swimmers.
things to note
-
Access to La Bergerie is via an 800m unpaved forest track which can be a little bumpy and steep in places but I have always found it to be absolutely fine with a standard family car.
I have never had any issues with this car and none of my guests have ever experienced damage to their vehicles but choosing an SUV to hire if you are unused to rural driving may be a good idea.
However if you aren’t comfortable in natural/rural environments this may not be the house for you.
It’s rustic & simple, that truly is its charm and a drive on an unpaved road is the only way to reach such a calm and rural environment.
Please remember, life’s an adventure, it's good to get off the beaten track once in a while :)
-
A car is highly recommended when staying at the property, as there is only patchy public transport to get you to and from the local village (note that the narrow & steep country road into the village isn’t a safe walking experience).
There are two great taxi companies in the village if you wish to take a day off the driving - perhaps for your tour of the many local vineyards.
-
The infinity pool is not heated and is therefore open only from the end of May through to the end of September.
-
La Bergerie prefers to host guests over the age of eight years old due to safety precautions around the unfenced swimming pool.
Thank you for your understanding.
practicalities
-
La Bergerie is set up to provide a relaxing and peaceful holiday so I have provided many of the essentials.
All bed linens and towels (including pool towels) are provided.
Inside you’ll find an iron and hairdryer.
The kitchen is well stocked with beautiful Le Creuset cookware and a Lacanche oven.
-
The water in the taps is not drinkable, so you will need to drink bottled water when you stay at La Bergerie. For cooking and coffee-making the tap water is absolutely fine.
A complimentary bottle or two of drinking water is provided upon check-in.
On Sundays the supermarkets close early so please plan your arrival time accordingly if you need to stock-up on groceries en route to the house.
-
Check In is from 4pm on the day of your arrival.
We ask that you depart by 10am, to allow our cleaners to efficiently do their work.
-
The closest airport is Marseille which is up to a 90 minute drive from La Bergerie.
We recommend hiring a car, and there is free parking for 3 cars at the property.
